A Word From The Pastor:

Are You Jesus?

I’m dedicating May to the topic of being a servant. Obviously, Mother’s Day is a great example of
honoring wonderful great servants of our lives. Memorial Day honors our wonderful veterans, past and
present, who gave or are giving their lives in service for our country.

But the greatest example obviously is Jesus! Jesus came not to be served, but to serve and give His
life as a ransom for many. During the Last Supper, we see a great example of Jesus’ heart. Guests who
arrived at a house for a meal were usually greeted by a servant, who would wash their feet. People reclined at
a table with their feet extended into their “neighbor’s space.” So, feet needed cleansing! Since no one was
available that evening of the Last Supper, we read the familiar words...

"Jesus rose from supper, laid aside his garments, and girded himself with a towel. Then he poured
water into a basin, and began to wash the disciple’s feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was
girded."

The reason Jesus washed their feet, including Judas’ feet, wasn’t just because no one was available,
though someone’s absence certainly opened the possibility. He washed their feet to be an example to them,
for the church all time, and because it was the Father’s will. Jesus undoubtedly knew ahead of time that He
was going to wash their feet, but I would imagine His spontaneity certainly caught them off guard, to say the
least!

Can you imagine a world leader at a meal with other world leaders, suddenly rising and kneeling before
them to wash their feet? But here is the greatest leader of all time, the Alpha and Omega, kneeling and
washing feet! As familiar as we are with the text, when we put into our context of great leaders and one kneels
to wash feet, it does seem a bit absurd, doesn’t it?

Washing feet means a lot of things, both literally and symbolically. There have been and perhaps still
are, certain Christian groups that practice “foot washing” and view it as we might view baptism or communion.
That said,

     • What does it mean to us to be a servant?
     • What does it mean to serve the Lord and others without recognition?
     • What might it mean to us if we’re the only one washing feet, but we don’t care?

Most reading this are so familiar with the term that sometimes I wonder if the idea of a “servant’s heart”
has lost its meaning.

I remember a story. Early one morning an American soldier was involved in clean up efforts in London.
As he was turning the corner to head back to his barracks, he spotted a young boy with his nose pressed up
against the window of a bakery. The little boy was obviously eyeing new doughnuts being made. The soldier
quickly stopped, went into the bakery, and came out with a bag. He asked the little boy, “Would like some of
these?” “Oh yeah...I would!” So, the soldier gave him the entire bag of doughnuts. As the soldier was walking
back to his jeep, the little boy asked him...” Mr., are you Jesus?” *

Oh, that people would ask that of us...
                                                         Blessings,
                                                         Pastor Ross

May Scripture Reading

For the month of May we focus our Bible reading on texts of being a servant of the Lord and of
others. Read portions of the assigned text for the week. Let's ask ourselves: how does this
speak to me about being a servant? How was Jesus a servant? What needs to happen in my
heart or actions from what Paul wrote about gifts, giving others grace, or being graced by
others? What could happen to others or myself if I became more servant-focused? May Jesus
be exalted in our hearts and actions because we take the time each day In His Word!

May 1-10 ---- John 13:1-20

May 11-17 ---Romans 12:1-20

May 18-24 --- Romans 14:1-23

May 25-31 --- Romans 15:1-13
